How to Use

  1. Choose the direction: Select "Decimal → Percent" or "Percent → Decimal" using the tabs.
  2. Enter your value: Type the decimal or percentage in the input field.
  3. Read the result: The converted value appears instantly in the results panel.

What You'll Discover

  • Percentage (Decimal → Percent tab) — your decimal multiplied by 100, with the % sign added. 0.75 becomes 75%.
  • Decimal (Percent → Decimal tab) — your percentage divided by 100. 75 becomes 0.75.
  • Your input, echoed back — the second row repeats the value you typed in its original form, so you can compare both forms side by side and copy either one.

Results are shown to up to ten decimal places, with trailing zeros removed. That handles very small values such as 0.00045 (0.045%) and values greater than 1 such as 2.5 (250%). Negative numbers work too: −0.15 converts to −15%. In the percent tab, type the number only, without the % sign.

Formula

Decimal to Percent

Multiply the decimal by 100 to get the percentage:

Percentage = Decimal × 100

Example: 0.35 × 100 = 35%

Percent to Decimal

Divide the percentage by 100 to get the decimal:

Decimal = Percentage ÷ 100

Example: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35

The conversion is simply moving the decimal point two places: right to go from decimal to percent, left to go from percent to decimal.

Examples

Example 1 — Test score

A student answers 18 out of 24 questions correctly. As a decimal: 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75. As a percentage: 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

Example 2 — Interest rate

A savings account pays 0.035 interest annually. As a percentage: 0.035 × 100 = 3.5%.

Example 3 — Probability

A probability of 0.008 expressed as a percentage: 0.008 × 100 = 0.8% — a less-than-one-percent chance.

Why Multiplying by 100 Works

"Percent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "per hundred". A percentage is a number of hundredths. The decimal 1 is one whole, which is 100 hundredths, or 100%. Every decimal converts the same way: count how many hundredths it holds.

Place value makes this easy to see. In 0.465, the 4 is in the tenths place and the 6 is in the hundredths place, so 0.465 is 46.5 hundredths. That is 46.5%. Multiplying by 100 shifts every digit two places to the left in value, which is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the right.

MethodExample with 0.465When it helps
Multiply by 1000.465 × 100 = 46.5%Calculators and spreadsheets
Move the decimal point two places right0.465 → 46.5 → 46.5%Mental math
Write as a fraction over 1000.465 = 46.5/100 = 46.5%Showing your work in class

Filling in missing digits

When there are not enough digits to move the point past, add zeros. 0.2 is 0.20, which becomes 20%. A whole number like 5 is 5.00, which becomes 500%. Trailing zeros never change the value: 0.050 and 0.05 are both 5%.

Reversing the conversion

To go from a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100 or move the decimal point two places left. 46.5% becomes 0.465, and 0.81% becomes 0.0081. Use the Percent → Decimal tab above to check.

Decimals Above 1, Tiny Decimals and Negative Decimals

The rule never changes, but these cases are where most people slip up. The table shows how each one converts.

CaseDecimalPercentageWhat it means
Greater than 11.08108%8% more than the whole, such as a growth factor
Greater than 12.5250%Two and a half times the whole
Very small0.00810.81%Less than 1 in 100
Very small0.0050.5%Half of one percent
Negative−0.15−15%A 15% decrease or loss
Repeating0.333...33.33% (exactly 33⅓%)One third

Growth factors and multipliers

A decimal above 1 often describes a multiplier. A factor of 1.08 means 108% of the original, which is an 8% increase. A factor of 0.92 means 92% of the original, which is an 8% decrease. Subtract 1 (or 100%) to get the change.

Small decimals

Leading zeros matter. 0.05 is 5%, but 0.005 is 0.5%, ten times smaller. Count the places carefully, or let the calculator do it. It shows up to ten decimal places, so values like 0.00045 (0.045%) convert accurately.

Negative decimals

The sign stays the same. −0.15 becomes −15%, which usually describes a fall in price, value or rate.

Common Decimal and Percent Mistakes

The arithmetic is simple, so mistakes usually come from moving the point the wrong number of places or in the wrong direction.

MistakeWrongRight
Moving the point only one place0.465 = 4.65%0.465 = 46.5%
Treating 0.5 as 5%0.5 = 5%0.5 = 50%; 5% = 0.05
Using a percentage directly in a formula$1,000 × 4.5 = $4,500 interest$1,000 × 0.045 = $45 interest
Reading a small percentage as a decimal0.5% = 0.50.5% = 0.005
Moving the point the wrong way25% = 2,50025% = 0.25

A quick sanity check catches most of these. A decimal between 0 and 1 must give a percentage between 0% and 100%. A decimal of exactly 1 is 100%. If your answer falls outside that range, recheck the decimal point.

Finance often uses basis points for small rate changes. One basis point is 0.01%, or 0.0001 as a decimal. A rate rise of 25 basis points is 0.25 percentage points.

What Is the Percentage If...

What is the percentage if the decimal is 0.2?

0.2 is 20%. Add a zero to get 0.20, then move the decimal point two places right. Or multiply: 0.2 × 100 = 20%.

What is the percentage if the decimal is 0.035?

0.035 is 3.5%. 0.035 × 100 = 3.5. Interest rates and tax rates are often stored this way in formulas and spreadsheets.

What is the percentage if the decimal is 1.25?

1.25 is 125%. 1.25 × 100 = 125%. A value of 125% is a quarter more than the whole, so it is a 25% increase on the original.

What is the percentage if the decimal is 0.005?

0.005 is 0.5%, half of one percent. 0.005 × 100 = 0.5. Do not confuse it with 0.05, which is 5%, ten times larger.

What is the percentage if the decimal is 2.5?

2.5 is 250%. 2.5 × 100 = 250%. Any decimal above 1 gives a percentage above 100%.

What is the percentage if the decimal is negative, like −0.15?

−0.15 is −15%. The sign carries through: −0.15 × 100 = −15%. This usually describes a 15% decrease.

What is the percentage if a probability is 0.0625?

A probability of 0.0625 is 6.25%. 0.0625 × 100 = 6.25%. This is the chance of four heads in a row with a fair coin, because 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.0625.

What is the percentage if the decimal repeats, like 0.333...?

0.333... is about 33.33%, or exactly 33⅓%. Multiplying by 100 gives 33.333..., which never ends. Round to two decimal places for most uses, or use the fraction 1/3 when you need the exact value.

What is the percentage if a growth factor is 1.08?

A growth factor of 1.08 is 108%, which means an 8% increase. 1.08 × 100 = 108%. Subtract 100% to get the size of the change.

What is the decimal if the percentage is 7.5%?

7.5% is 0.075 as a decimal. Divide by 100: 7.5 ÷ 100 = 0.075. Moving the decimal point two places left gives the same answer. Use the Percent → Decimal tab to check.

How to convert a percent to a decimal

Divide the percentage by 100, or move the decimal point two places to the left. 45% becomes 0.45, 4.5% becomes 0.045, and 150% becomes 1.5. The Percent → Decimal tab does this for you.

How to convert a decimal to a fraction

Write the decimal over a power of 10, then simplify. 0.375 has three decimal places, so write it as 375/1000. Dividing both by 125 gives 3/8.

Is 0.5 the same as 5%?

No. 0.5 is 50%, and 5% is 0.05. This is one of the most common slips. 0.5 is half the whole, while 5% is one twentieth of it.

How to convert a decimal to a percent in Excel

Select the cell and apply the Percentage number format. A cell holding 0.25 then displays as 25%. The stored value stays 0.25, so formulas keep working. If you want the number 25 itself, use =A1*100 instead.

What is a basis point?

A basis point is one hundredth of a percent: 0.01%, or 0.0001 as a decimal. It is used for interest rates and bond yields. A change from 4.50% to 4.75% is 25 basis points.

How to use a percentage in a formula

Convert it to a decimal first. To find 4.5% interest on $1,000, multiply by 0.045, not 4.5: $1,000 × 0.045 = $45. Most formulas for interest, tax and growth expect the rate as a decimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a decimal to a percent?

Multiply the decimal by 100. For example, 0.42 × 100 = 42%. Think of it as moving the decimal point two places to the right: 0.42 becomes 42.

How do I convert a percent to a decimal?

Divide the percentage by 100. For example, 42% ÷ 100 = 0.42. This is like moving the decimal point two places to the left: 42 becomes 0.42.

Can a decimal be greater than 1?

Yes. A decimal like 1.5 means 150% — one and a half times the whole. Decimals greater than 1 are common in growth rates, multipliers, and ratios. For example, if sales grew by 50%, the multiplier is 1.5.

What is the decimal for 100%?

100% as a decimal is exactly 1.0. This represents the whole. 50% = 0.5 (half), 200% = 2.0 (double), and 0.1% = 0.001.

Why do we multiply by 100 to convert to percent?

The word "percent" means "per hundred" (from Latin per centum). So a percentage is simply a number expressed as a fraction of 100. Multiplying a decimal by 100 scales it to this "out of 100" format. For example, the decimal 0.75 means 75 parts out of 100, which we write as 75%.

Is 0.5 the same as 5%?

No. 0.5 is 50%, because 0.5 × 100 = 50. 5% as a decimal is 0.05. Mixing these up is one of the most common percentage errors, so check the number of decimal places.

How do I convert a negative decimal to a percent?

Multiply by 100 and keep the minus sign. −0.15 becomes −15%, and −1.2 becomes −120%. The calculator accepts negative values in both tabs.

How do I convert a repeating decimal to a percent?

Multiply by 100 as usual, then round. 0.666... becomes 66.666...%, which is 66.67% to two decimal places. For an exact answer, convert the repeating decimal to a fraction first: 0.666... is 2/3, which is exactly 66⅔%.

How many decimal places does the calculator show?

Up to ten, with trailing zeros removed. 0.75 shows as 75%, not 75.0000000000%. This keeps very small values, such as 0.00045 (0.045%), accurate without cluttering everyday results.

Can I type the % sign in the percent box?

No. The box accepts numbers only, so type 75 rather than 75%. The result panel adds the % sign for you.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved, and no account is needed.
