Fraction to Percent Calculator
Use this fraction to percent calculator to convert any fraction to a percentage. Enter the numerator and denominator — get the percentage, decimal and simplified fraction instantly.
How to Use
- Enter the numerator — the number on the top of the fraction (e.g. 3 in 3/4).
- Enter the denominator — the number on the bottom of the fraction (e.g. 4 in 3/4).
- Read the results: the percentage, decimal, and simplified fraction all appear instantly.
- The denominator cannot be zero — division by zero is undefined.
What You'll Discover
- Percentage — the fraction as a percent, shown to up to six decimal places. Whole-number answers such as 75% are shown without decimals.
- Decimal — the result of numerator ÷ denominator, shown to up to ten decimal places. This is the step between the fraction and the percentage.
- Simplified fraction — the fraction in lowest terms, found by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor. If the denominator simplifies to 1, you see a whole number instead (for example, 8/4 shows as 2).
The simplified fraction only appears when both inputs are whole numbers. If you enter a decimal such as 1.5/2.5, the percentage and decimal are still calculated, and the simplified fraction shows N/A. A zero denominator shows an error, because division by zero is undefined.
Formula
Converting a fraction to a percentage is straightforward: divide the numerator by the denominator, then multiply by 100.
Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100
For example, the fraction 3/4 converts as: (3 ÷ 4) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
To simplify a fraction, find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For 6/8: GCD(6,8) = 2, so 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.

Examples
Example 1 — Simple fraction
Convert 7/20 to a percentage: (7 ÷ 20) × 100 = 0.35 × 100 = 35%.
Example 2 — Improper fraction
Convert 5/4 to a percentage: (5 ÷ 4) × 100 = 1.25 × 100 = 125%. Fractions greater than 1 produce percentages greater than 100%.
Example 3 — Fraction with simplification
Convert 12/16 to a percentage. First simplify: GCD(12, 16) = 4, so 12/16 = 3/4. Then: (3 ÷ 4) × 100 = 75%.
Three Ways to Convert a Fraction to a Percent
Every method gives the same answer. Which one is fastest depends on the denominator.
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Divide, then multiply by 100 | Numerator ÷ denominator × 100 | Any fraction. This is what the calculator does. |
| Scale to a denominator of 100 | Multiply top and bottom by the same number until the bottom is 100 | Denominators of 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25 or 50 |
| Simplify first, then use a benchmark | Reduce the fraction to lowest terms and recall a known value | Fractions that reduce to halves, quarters, fifths or eighths |
Scaling to 100
"Percent" means "per hundred", so a fraction with 100 on the bottom is already a percentage. For 3/20, multiply both numbers by 5 to get 15/100, which is 15%. For 13/25, multiply by 4 to get 52/100, or 52%. No division is needed, which makes this the quickest method for mental math.
Simplifying first
Simplifying is optional. The percentage does not change, because a simplified fraction has the same value. It just makes the numbers easier to recognise. 45/60 reduces to 3/4, which you may already know is 75%. The calculator shows the simplified form alongside the percentage, so you can see both at once.
Dividing by hand
When the denominator does not divide evenly into 100, use long division. For 5/12, divide 5 by 12 to get 0.41666..., then multiply by 100 to get 41.666...%. Round only at the end, usually to two decimal places: 41.67%.
Repeating Decimals and Rounding
A fraction in lowest terms gives a terminating decimal only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. Any other denominator, such as 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 or 12, gives a decimal that repeats forever. The percentage repeats too, so it has to be rounded.
| Fraction | Exact percentage | Calculator shows | Rounded to 2 places |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/3 | 33⅓% | 33.333333% | 33.33% |
| 2/3 | 66⅔% | 66.666667% | 66.67% |
| 1/6 | 16⅔% | 16.666667% | 16.67% |
| 5/6 | 83⅓% | 83.333333% | 83.33% |
| 1/7 | 14.285714...% | 14.285714% | 14.29% |
| 1/9 | 11.111...% | 11.111111% | 11.11% |
| 1/11 | 9.0909...% | 9.090909% | 9.09% |
| 1/12 | 8⅓% | 8.333333% | 8.33% |
The calculator shows up to six decimal places, which is enough for almost any use. For schoolwork, two decimal places is the usual convention. If you need the exact value, write the repeating part as a fraction: 1/3 is exactly 33⅓%, because 100 ÷ 3 = 33⅓.
Rounded percentages may not add up to exactly 100%. Thirds rounded to 33.33% each total 99.99%. This is a rounding effect, not a calculation error.
Mixed Numbers, Improper Fractions and Negative Fractions
The same divide-and-multiply rule works for every kind of fraction. Some just need a quick step first.
Mixed numbers
A mixed number such as 2¼ has a whole part and a fraction part. Convert it to an improper fraction first: multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. For 2¼, that is 2 × 4 + 1 = 9, so 2¼ = 9/4. Enter 9 and 4 to get 225%. You can also convert the parts separately: 2 = 200% and ¼ = 25%, which add to 225%.
Improper fractions
When the numerator is larger than the denominator, the fraction is greater than 1 and the percentage is greater than 100%. 5/4 is 125% and 3/2 is 150%. These are normal results, often used to compare against a target or a previous value.
Negative fractions
A negative fraction gives a negative percentage: −3/4 is −75%. Enter the minus sign on the numerator for the clearest simplified fraction. Negative percentages usually describe a loss or a decrease.
Going the other way: percent to fraction
To turn a percentage back into a fraction, write it over 100 and simplify. 35% = 35/100 = 7/20. For a decimal percentage, multiply top and bottom by 10 until both are whole numbers: 12.5% = 12.5/100 = 125/1000 = 1/8.
What Percentage Is It If...
What percentage is it if I got 17 out of 20 on a test?
17 out of 20 is 85%. Divide 17 by 20 to get 0.85, then multiply by 100. You can also scale it: multiply both numbers by 5 to get 85/100, which is 85%.
What percentage is it if I got 45 out of 60?
45 out of 60 is 75%. 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, and 0.75 × 100 = 75%. The fraction simplifies to 3/4, which the calculator shows as the simplified fraction.
What percentage is it if I got 38 out of 50?
38 out of 50 is 76%. Double both numbers to get 76/100, which is 76%. The fraction simplifies to 19/25.
What percentage is it if the fraction is 7/8?
7/8 is 87.5%. 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875, and 0.875 × 100 = 87.5%. Eighths always end in .5 or a whole number: 1/8 is 12.5%, so each extra eighth adds 12.5%.
What percentage is it if the fraction is 2/3?
2/3 is about 66.67%, or exactly 66⅔%. 2 ÷ 3 = 0.6666... repeating, so the percentage repeats too. The calculator shows 66.666667%, and two decimal places is the usual way to write it.
What percentage is it if the fraction is 1/6?
1/6 is about 16.67%, or exactly 16⅔%. 1 ÷ 6 = 0.1666..., and multiplying by 100 gives 16.666...%. Six is not built only from 2s and 5s, so the decimal never ends.
What percentage is it if the fraction is 5/7?
5/7 is about 71.43%. 5 ÷ 7 = 0.714285714..., where the six digits 714285 repeat. Multiplied by 100 that is 71.428571...%, which rounds to 71.43%.
What percentage is it if I have the mixed number 2¼?
2¼ is 225%. Convert it to the improper fraction 9/4 (2 × 4 + 1 = 9), then divide: 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25, and 2.25 × 100 = 225%. Enter 9 as the numerator and 4 as the denominator.
What percentage is it if the fraction is 3/1000?
3/1000 is 0.3%. 3 ÷ 1000 = 0.003, and 0.003 × 100 = 0.3%. Small fractions give percentages below 1%, which is common for error rates and defect rates.
What percentage is it if the fraction is negative, like −3/4?
−3/4 is −75%. The sign carries through: −3 ÷ 4 = −0.75, and −0.75 × 100 = −75%. A negative percentage typically describes a decrease or a loss.

How to convert a mixed number to a percent
Turn it into an improper fraction, then divide and multiply by 100. 1½ becomes 3/2, and 3 ÷ 2 × 100 = 150%. A quick check: the whole number part is always that many hundreds of percent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a fraction to a percent?
Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) to get a decimal, then multiply that decimal by 100 and add a percent sign. For example, 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.
What if the fraction is greater than 1 (improper fraction)?
The process is identical. An improper fraction like 7/4 = 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75, which as a percentage is 175%. Percentages above 100% are valid and common in growth calculations (e.g. "revenue grew to 150% of last year").
Can the denominator be zero?
No. Division by zero is mathematically undefined. A fraction like 5/0 has no meaningful value. If you need to represent "zero in the denominator," reconsider the problem — you likely have no valid basis for comparison.
How does the simplified fraction work?
To simplify a fraction, find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of both numbers and divide them by it. For 6/9: GCD(6,9) = 3, so 6/9 = 2/3. The simplified fraction represents the same value with the smallest possible whole numbers.
Can the numerator or denominator be a decimal?
Yes — mathematically you can have fractions like 1.5/2.5, which equals 60%. This calculator accepts decimal inputs for both fields. The simplified fraction shows N/A in that case, because simplifying with a greatest common divisor is defined for whole numbers.
How do I convert a mixed number to a percent?
Convert it to an improper fraction first. Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 2¼ becomes 9/4. Then enter 9 and 4 to get 225%.
Why does 1/3 show as 33.333333%?
1 ÷ 3 is a repeating decimal, so the percentage never ends. The calculator shows up to six decimal places. Round to 33.33% for most uses, or write 33⅓% when you need the exact value.
Do I need to simplify the fraction before converting?
No. A fraction and its simplified form have the same value, so they give the same percentage. 12/16 and 3/4 are both 75%. Simplifying only makes hand calculation easier, and the calculator shows the simplified form for you.
Can I convert a negative fraction?
Yes. Enter a minus sign on the numerator, for example −3 and 4, to get −75%. The simplified fraction then shows as −3/4.
How do I convert a percentage back to a fraction?
Write the percentage over 100 and simplify. 40% is 40/100, which reduces to 2/5. For a percentage with decimals, such as 12.5%, multiply top and bottom by 10 to get 125/1000, which reduces to 1/8.
