How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
- Enter your current grade: Your current overall percentage in the course (before the final).
- Enter your target grade: The minimum grade you want to achieve in the course.
- Enter the final exam weight: The percentage the final exam counts toward your overall grade.
- View results: See the minimum score you need on the final and best/worst case scenarios.
Formula
The required final grade is calculated as:
Required Final = (Target - Current × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight
Where all values are expressed as decimals (e.g., 85% = 0.85).
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
If the required grade exceeds 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible to achieve with the final exam alone. You may need to explore extra credit options or adjust your target.
Does this work for weighted categories?
This calculator assumes the final exam is a single weighted component. If your course has multiple weighted categories, first calculate your current weighted average, then use that as your current grade.
